Interactive Read-Aloud for Reading Recall Strategies

Updated: Aug 15

Read Aloud to Boost Reading Recall of Challenging Texts

adaptive teaching and learning

Asking students to read material aloud can improve recall by 12 percentage points.

I provide instructions for teaching reading recall strategies and comprehension!

I ask students to read aloud when dealing with complex or challenging texts. This strategy is based on the principle that reading aloud helps students to engage more deeply with the text, improving their understanding and retention.

For instance, the esteemed literacy expert Timothy Shanahan strongly advocates pairing students to “read sections of the text aloud to each other” and ask clarifying questions.

Choral reading is a powerful technique that allows teachers and students to read a text in unison, improves reading fluency and vocabulary, and boosts students’ confidence.

As a lesson ends, I close the loop by asking students to briefly recite, summarize, and discuss key ideas from a passage. This sequence of activities can supercharge retention and encourage students to listen attentively.
