Effective Science of Learning Expertise
Updated: Aug 16
Effective science of learning begins with assessment, identifies the learner’s specific skill gaps, sets measurable goals, and uses a planned sequence rather than disconnected activities or generic homework help.
A complete lesson may address five connected areas: phonemic awareness; explicit phonics and spelling; accurate, increasingly fluent reading; vocabulary and oral language; and comprehension. The emphasis should vary with assessment data. A learner with weak decoding may need intensive word-reading and spelling practice before comprehension strategies can transfer reliably to grade-level text.
Strong science of literacy expertise also includes clear modeling, guided practice, immediate corrective feedback, cumulative review, decodable or appropriately controlled text, and regular progress monitoring. Families should receive understandable updates showing what was taught, how the child responded, and what will change next. The five components of reading are Phonics, Phonemic Awareness, Vocabulary, Fluency, and Comprehension.
These effective reading components create strong, rich, and reliable reading abilities.
Here are some other components of reading:
Phonological awareness
Alphabetic principle
Vocabulary development
Making inferences
